Anyone who attended elementary school in the past 40 years likely came into contact with The Oregon Trail®, the educational first-person simulator developed by a few history-buff schoolteachers to help kids better enjoy learning about the American frontier. Game players would name wagon party members, purchase supplies, and set out upon the famous American Trail in 1848 on oxen-led wagons. Along the way, players are forced to deal with river crossings, illnesses, hunting, trading with Native Americans, and a host of other mid-nineteenth century dilemmas.
Though rarely played in schools today, Oregon Trail's legacy lives on thanks to its cult-hit status and nostalgic reverence. Hundreds of knock-off games, T-shirts, videos, and websites have been created in devotion and homage to a game that shaped so many childhood experiences in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. And now, for the first time, Oregon Trail will be brought to life on stage!
As writer and director, NOLA Project Artistic Director A.J. Allegra brings his unique and quirky sense of humor to the story of the Bootsmeyer family, as they try to survive the grueling cross-country journey...and each other. Like a hybrid of 'Bonanza', 'The Simpsons', and 'Little Miss Sunshine', 'Oregon Trail' pays tribute to the American traditions of Westerns, dysfunctional families, and cross-country road trips, all with the trappings of the beloved game played by so many millions in school.
