SYNOPSIS
Magical realism and literal collide in "Almost, Maine"
The Loyola University Department of Theatre Arts and Dance and director C. Patrick Gendusa kick off the 2010-2011 season with Almost, Maine, John Cariani's quirky romantic comedy in nine vignettes. Coming to the Lower Depths Theater October 1-9, 2010, this charmer has entertained audiences from Broadway to the west coast.
The tales unfold in the chill of midwinter under the northern lights, which adds a magical element as part of each story. Love sparkles in many guises under the aurora borealis in the unofficial town of Almost, Maine. Almost never quite got there because We never got organized, explains one of the characters. In this quiet, remote, sometimes lonely place, unexpected magic lingers in the air like someone's breath on a cold winter's night.
"The stories are full of sweet surprises, so human they touch something deep. Sweet, poignant and witty," said The New York Daily News. The characters and dialogue surprise a laugh out of you. "John Cariani aims for the heart by way of the funny bone," - The Star Leger.
"The characters remind you of how love used to feel." Author John Cariani, wrote that 'Almost, Maine' "...is its own unique emotional nut to crack... The endings of each scene are "suspensions, fraught with uncertainty." The house lights fade on this suspended uncertainty, at the moment of change. But joy is always there "bubbling under the surface. Resolution and catharsis come after the scene." Cariani aims for natural dialogue, in 'poetry well disguised; poetry that sneaks up on an audience.
