Goat in the Road Productions (GRP) - co-producers of last fall’s hit musical, Major Swelling's Salvation Salve Medicine Show, and creators of the highly acclaimed Play/Write: A Children’s Playwriting Festival - proudly announces its newest production: an original dance theatre creation, THE DON EFFECT. ABOUT THE SHOW
Join us ONE WEEKEND ONLY, as we dance, break bread, share family recipes and tell stories. Through dance, theatre, film, music and food, THE DON EFFECT explores the human desire to recreate the un-re-creatable: namely, choreographed dances and family recipes. Six ensemble members play a diverse cast of characters: an executive chef; the interim CEO of a sinking corporation; a grieving granddaughter; two dance archivists; and more. In their struggles to reconstruct originals - from famous concert dances to grandma's biscuits – each encounters the failure of written language to capture embodied experiences. But they persevere. In the kitchen, in the archive, and at the table, they experiment with taste buds, muscle memory, and alchemy. They measure their own faulty memories against the recipe card, the dance notes and the archival footage, all in a passionate attempt to distinguish nostalgia from fantasy, memory from desire, and failure from invention. Each performance ends in sharing food with the audience. BE A PART OF THE ART
Share your recipes, food stories, and personal artifacts with the performance and the archive. GRP is partnering with the Southern Food and Beverage Museum (SoFAB) to make this Don Effect experience one that also documents memory, food and dance. Contribute your own family recipe to the show by sharing it on THE DON EFFECT blog, GRP’s Facebook page, or by bringing it in writing to the box office. Your words may be added to the script!

In addition to sharing recipes, bring a menu, recipe box, or other artifact of your food memories to the performance. GRP will guest curate an exhibit of these collected items at SoFAB, ensuring that memory is made tangible after the curtain closes. The exhibit will feature the audience’s donated recipes and artifacts, alongside performance photos and parts of the set to memorialize THE DON EFFECT. GRP’s and SoFAB’s websites will be linked to ensure that your recipes and memories will remain available.
