The New Orleans premiere of the cult musical by ABBA frontmen Benny Andersen and Bjorn Ulvaeus, the musical is based on the legendary 1974 chess match between Soviet master Boris Spasky and American master Bobby Fisher. A huge media circus has erupted in Thailand over a long-anticipated chess match between American bad-boy Freddie Trumper (Vatican Lokey) and the quiet Soviet master Anatoly Sergievsky (Donald Loupe, Jr.) Added to the mix are Freddie's second, Florence (Nicole Rollin Teague), a former lover now a virtual slave to Trumper; his agent Walter (Kevin Fricke); Anatoly's Soviet handler Molokov (Travis Resor) and the unexpected arrival of his wife from Russia, Svetlana (Tara Brewer.) The icy and controlling Arbiter (Raphaelle) tries vainly to control the Soviet propaganda machine and Freddie Trumper's vainglorious rants, tantrums, and upstagings.
