Are life and death two of humankind’s most challenging situations? Is there life after death? How important is “quality of life?” Is there a personal heaven or hell to face in the hereafter? These questions and more are tackled in four witty, sometimes sobering ten-minute plays which visit the human capacity to dream; living with cancer; experiencing terminal illness and maintaining sincerity in life.
American Theatre Project, fresh off of its acclaimed run of “Bourbon at the Border” by Pearl Cleage, heats up the Backyard Ballroom while zany characters travel through various versions of the afterlife. Three of the ten-minute plays, which premiered in Washington, DC are written by the Frank Cunat ("Gumshoe", "Countdown: A Ghost Story" and "Not With A Bang") who was awarded the distinction of Outstanding New Playwright by the Source Theatre Festival of Washington, DC; and the fourth play is a world premiere by Florida native Joyce Sampson ("AfterShock") who is a recipient of new playwright accolades from the National Black Theatre Festival and the Frank Silvera Playwriting Workshop in New York City.
"Heaven's Waiting: Four 10-minute Treatments on Life and Death" directed by Ed Bishop, featuring CARLOS GONZALEZ, LATRICIA HUSTON, and RICK JAY runs Thursday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, November 14 at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, November 15 at 9:00 p.m. at the Backyard Ballroom, 3519 St. Claude Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana as part of the New Orleans Fringe Festival, 2009.
