On Monday, October 12th, eight New Orleans theatre artists from several local theatre companies will perform a reading of The Laramie Project- 10 Years Later, a new play by the Tectonic Theater Project. The play is an epilogue that features interviews with many of the characters in the original Laramie Project a decade later. The reading is at Cabaret Le Chat Noir at 715 St. Charles Avenue at 7:00 PM. The reading is free and open to the public.
In the summer of 2003, the Laramie Project made its local debut at the University of New Orleans with some of New Orleans finest actors. Jennifer Pagan, one of the cast members of the regional premier, will join seven other actors (Claudia Baumgarten, Philip Cramer, Sean Glazebrook, Lorenzo Gonzalez, Andrew Larimer, Joanna Russo & Cassie Young) in the upcoming reading. The Laramie Project is a powerful drama that documents the impact of a hate crime on a community, and is based on hundreds of interviews that the theater company conducted in Laramie, Wyoming in the year following the brutal 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student.
Moises Kaufman, playwright and director with the Tectonic Theater Project, spoke of his goals for The Laramie Project- 10 Years Later in a recent interview with the New York Times: “We wanted to see what occurs in a small town in the long run when it’s been subject to such a devastating event. What has been the long-lasting effect of this watershed moment? Is the fallout of these events positive, negative or perhaps a better question, is it measurable in those terms?”
Over a hundred readings of The Laramie Project- 10 Years Later will take place around the country at the same time as the one at Le Chat Noir, including two others in New Orleans.
