Salvation Is at Hand!
Goat in the Road Productions Presents ~A~ Cripple Creek Theater Company Production ~OF~ Major Archibald Swelling's Salvation Salve Medicine Show ~AT THE~ 2009 New Orleans Fringe Festival ~AT THE~ Marigny Theater November 11-15 ~AND~ December 3-12
Major Swelling’s Salvation Salve Medicine Show is led by huckster, schemer, and civil war veteran Major Archibald Swelling as he moves from town to town hawking his Salvation Salve - an elixir purported to heal the sick, make you rich, and exhume Louisiana’s bygone political superstars…in zombie form, of course. Swelling’s entourage, a rag tag troupe of singing, dancing clowns, tirelessly entertains the throngs to help Swelling sell more bottles of Salvation Salve.
All is going well until Swelling’s arch nemesis, Bobby Jindal, hijacks the Medicine Show to pedal his own Jubilation Juice, a sinister version of Swelling’s Salve that induces mindless obedience. But Major Swelling won’t take it lying down. Witness the showdown between old and new, stasis and reform, history and progress… and perhaps get some healin’ for what ails ya!
Major Swelling’s Salvation Salve Medicine Show is an original work by local artists. The script is written by Andrew Vaught of Cripple Creek Theatre Company, a professional, non-equity organization dedicated to producing dramatic works of cultural, historical, and political relevance in order to provoke the general public into social action. The music is written by William Bowling of Goat in the Road Productions, a young, New Orleans-based nonprofit organization dedicated to producing original, innovative theatre, dance and performance art. Chris Kaminstein, also of Goat in the Road, directs actors Ross Britz, Rachel Carrico, Nicholas Clark, Shannon Flaherty, Michael Gottwald, Ian Hoch, Francesa McKenzie, Krista Schafer, Andrew Vaught and Emilie Whelan. Set design and construction by the artists of Young Artists/Young Aspirations, under the direction of Rontherin Ratliff.
