The Nicholls Players will present Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” from March 16 - March 19, 2006 in Talbot Theater on the Nicholls State University campus. Dr. Stanley Coleman, assistant professor of speech and theatre, directs the production.
Written in the late 16th century, the play takes the viewer into a land of fairies, a hapless band of comedic actors, and swooning young lovers. Considered by many as Shakespeare’s greatest comedy, this play contains much riotous humor set up by the group of mischievous fairies who create mayhem when casting spells that confuse the lovers as to the objects of their love.
The cast includes repeat Nicholls Players Jamie Allemand, Eric Haydel, Kristen Hebert, Elizabeth Holcomb, and Joey Pierce; newcomers include Darrington Anderson, Gregory Dawson, Toni Guidry, Jade Lafont, Madeline Lowe, Jon Mohon, Christian Samaha, Joshua Stelly, Laura Templet, Chris Wickwire, and Irvin Williams. A large group of dancers from NSU and youngsters from the community will perform the roles of the numerous fairies that support the devious works of the major character fairies. The mechanicals, a group of repairmen including a tinker, a joiner and a tailor, are a clueless band of would-be actors who bring hilarity and downright goofiness to the stage. Coleman stated, when announcing the selection of the play, “This is a play for those who want to have fun, fun for the players and certainly fun for the audiences. With this large cast of players, ages from four to forty, we guarantee our patrons an evening of laughter and plain fun, all to the magical and lovely language of Shakespeare.”
Other members of the production staff include: Dr. Myron Tuman, literary consultant; Bill Winkley, technical advisor; Angela Hammerli, choreographer; Aaron O’Neal, vocal coach; Nicole St. Laurent, stage manager/assistant director; and Stephanie Willette, assistant stage manager.
Performances will begin at 7:30 PM March 16th, 17th and 18th, with the Sunday matinee the 19th at 3:00 PM. Tickets are $10 general admission, $5 for students of all ages, with group rates available. For more information, call (985) 448-4586.
