After just winning two 2007 New Orleans’ Big Easy Awards for Best Comedy and Best Director, "Shut Up, Sweet Charlotte!" debuts in Provincetown for a summer run on Monday nights only at 8pm from June 30th – August 25th at the Art House. The show is a side-splitting parody of the original novel and the camp classic film Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964) which starred Bette Davis and Olivia DeHavilland. This larger-than-life production sold out last May in New Orleans and it stars two of that city’s biggest (literally) personalities working today – Ricky Graham as Charlotte and International Drag Sensation Varla Jean Merman (a.k.a. Jeffery Roberson) as Miriam. The show is directed by Jeffery Roberson and the cast also includes Mark Meehan, Brooks Braselman, Denise Gaylord, Alex Kyger and Mark Collins.
The time is 1927 and Charlotte Hollis (Ricky Graham) is a young woman having the time of her life at a party thrown by her father, rich plantation owner Big Sam. Charlotte's happiness is cut short when she offers her hand to her suitor John, who shortly finds himself without a hand, a head, or a life. Moving to the present day, we find Charlotte aged, crazed and shunned by the locals who think she murdered her lover those many years earlier. Charlotte's disheveled maid, Velma (Brooks Braselman), is her sole companion...at least until Cousin Miriam (Varla Jean Merman) shows up to "help" with things. Cousin Miriam fails to offer any assistance other than bringing in the family physician (Mark Meehan) to have her troubled relative committed. As the nightmares of her fiancé continue to haunt her, Charlotte ends up fighting for the Hollis estate, her sanity--and top billing.
The talented cast includes Mark Collins as Harry Willis, Mark Meehan as Dr. Drew Bayliss, Brooks Braselman as Velma Cruther, Denise Gaylord as Jewel Mayhew and Luke Standish and Alex Kyger as John Mayhew, the Foreman and the large hairy packing woman. Set design is by Allen Cutler, wigs are by Gerard Kelly and costumes are by Cecile Casey Covert.
